Letter from the Editor
Dear reader,
My work translates cultural, consumer, and market intelligence into trend forecasts, creative briefs, and product narratives. I've spoken to this work publicly: quoted in the NYT, WSJ, WWD, and Refinery29 on the permanence of lifestyle-as-fashion brands, industry needs, general fashion cues, social-driven trends and more.
If I wasn't building forecasts and creative strategies, you'd still find me near a rack of clothes, or behind an airport check-in counter as I did early in my career. The thread is customer service – its soft skills still serve me well, as trend forecasting hinges on the ability to read the room.
In 2022 I left NYC, home for almost ten years, and my role at WGSN, which I held for six, to return to Sydney. I set up my own practice, Miscellanea Studio, to house my work and collaborate with independent contractors I admire. I work with tech companies, trend and marketing agencies, and brands large and small across various timezones, which means scopes are fulfilled while a client is sleeping.
I'm also rethinking the way a brief gets delivered. In March I founded Modus, a web-app pairing an interactive report with a filterable, searchable database, starting with the Australian womenswear market. After unpacking The Thing About Trend Forecasting
The Thing About Trend Forecasting (2023) and The Hoodie Reflex
The Hoodie Reflex (2025), which defined contemporary 'basics' dress, I'm preparing a decisive read on the wider womenswear industry for the 2020s, drawn with Modus. Soon.
In the meantime, I share my short-form explorations on my Substack, More Miscellanea.
If you'd like to work together, or simply connect, I'd love to hear from you. Private portfolio is available upon request.
On a personal note, I'm looking forward to finishing Infinite Jest and visiting NYC and Seoul in 2027.
Thanks for visiting,
Marian
